1. On 11th July Parramatta Council unanimously endorsed Lord Mayor Zeiter writing to the
NSW Government calling for them to explore the purchase and restoration of the Roxy Theatre as a live music and entertainment venue. This was to be followed up with a meeting with Arts Minister John Graham. The Roxy Theatre Action Group (RTAG) provided the Lord Mayor with a printout of the 4300+ signatures on our Change.org petition, which the LM assured us would end up on the Minister's desk.
2. The Metro construction authority have acquired the land on both sides of the Roxy in order to provide access to the construction site. This land will not be returned until the Metro opens in at least 7 years. The Roxy will therefore be unable to operate as a theatre, pub, or anything else until this occurs.
3. The owner of the Roxy continues to state that he is not interested in selling, however both sides of politics publicly committed to acquiring and restoring the building as a performing arts venue, in the lead-up to the last election.
4. RTAG's position: the Government must purchase the building, urgently, to stop the deterioration and decay that is destroying the building from the inside; there is no reason why the Northern frontage on George Street could not be restored and activated immediately as an al fresco cafe, in time to be operational when the Powerhouse opens. Meanwhile the Government has 7 years to accumulate the funds to restore the theatre to its original Stalls/Dress Circle layout so that the Roxy may resume its rightful place as Parramatta's heritage jewel!

Parramatta’s historic Roxy Theatre opened in 1930 and was conceived as a grand picture palace with almost 2000 seats, and capable of staging live performances.
In September 2018 a Development Application which would effectively destroy all but the 700 seat Dress Circle and Foyer was rejected by the Central Sydney Planning Panel following a recommendation by NSW Heritage, and an appeal to the Land and Environment Court was rejected on 27th June 2019. This effectively protects the Roxy from further destruction, and preserves the potential for a full restoration of this priceless treasure to the Grand Lyric Theatre this city deserves.
The Roxy's auditorium can easily be converted back into its original Stalls and Dress Circle grandeur. The possibility of having a large lyric theatre that is also a magnificent heritage building is an unrivalled opportunity. The Roxy would be as impressive as any of the other great theatres of Australia including the Capitol in Sydney and the Regent in Melbourne.
The Roxy Theatre Action Group’s goal is to have the theatre fully restored to its original configuration, with the addition of full stage facilities, thus enabling the citizens of Parramatta and the Western Suburbs the opportunity to see the big commercial productions, as well as opera and ballet, rock concerts, comedy festivals and multi-cultural events without having to travel to the Sydney Metropolis.
All great cities need their heritage, and their entertainment infrastructure; the Roxy, embodying both of these critical elements, is already there!
