ROXY OWNER LODGES NEW DA
22/8/24
22/8/24
The owner of the Roxy Theatre, K Capital, has lodged a fresh Development Application for the Roxy to be converted to a hospitality venue. This is in direct conflict with the Roxy’s multiple Heritage classifications, and with the NSW Government’s commitment to acquire and restore the Roxy to its original state as a performing arts venue.
The plans include the demolition of the rear end of the building that comprises the original stage and proscenium arch.
The owner has consistently claimed that the Roxy will be restored, but this is referring only to the upstairs Dress Circle, which accounts for only a third of the Roxy’s original seating capacity. The downstairs Stalls and stage area will be lost forever.
The plans show a stage and some back of house provisions as part of the Dress Circle theatre, but these are token spaces that would incline a layperson to think that the Roxy is being restored. In fact the stage is only large enough to accommodate a standup comedian or rock band, it certainly will not be large enough for an orchestra or stage production of any kind.
Thanks to you, our supporters, we now have 4000 signatures in our Change.org petition! Please click the link above and sign it if you have not already done so, and encourage your friends to sign up too – and make a comment to express your outrage at this latest attempt to turn what is intended to be a family orientated precinct that includes the Powerhouse, into a hospitality venue whose principal remit will be the serving of alcohol.
Please also register your objection by going to the City of Parramatta website here, https://datracker.cityofparramatta.nsw.gov.au/Pages/XC.Track/SearchApplication.aspx?id=915687
where you will see all the plans, and a link to make a submission. Closing date is 3rd September!

Parramatta’s historic Roxy Theatre opened in 1930 and was conceived as a grand picture palace with almost 2000 seats, and capable of staging live performances.
In September 2018 a Development Application which would effectively destroy all but the 700 seat Dress Circle and Foyer was rejected by the Central Sydney Planning Panel following a recommendation by NSW Heritage, and an appeal to the Land and Environment Court was rejected on 27th June 2019. This effectively protects the Roxy from further destruction, and preserves the potential for a full restoration of this priceless treasure to the Grand Lyric Theatre this city deserves.
The Roxy's auditorium can easily be converted back into its original Stalls and Dress Circle grandeur. The possibility of having a large lyric theatre that is also a magnificent heritage building is an unrivalled opportunity. The Roxy would be as impressive as any of the other great theatres of Australia including the Capitol in Sydney and the Regent in Melbourne.
The Roxy Theatre Action Group’s goal is to have the theatre fully restored to its original configuration, with the addition of full stage facilities, thus enabling the citizens of Parramatta and the Western Suburbs the opportunity to see the big commercial productions, as well as opera and ballet, rock concerts, comedy festivals and multi-cultural events without having to travel to the Sydney Metropolis.
All great cities need their heritage, and their entertainment infrastructure; the Roxy, embodying both of these critical elements, is already there!
